City Girl, Country Vet by Cathy Woodman

13381980Maz is a veterinarian in London, coming off a heartbreak, and subbing in for her best friend from vet school while Emma is on a six-month vacay. Emma’s practice is rather new to the tiny country hamlet of Talyton St. George, where everyone talks about everyone and tourists are referred to a grockers (though they desperately need the tourist income to survive). Outsiders are viewed as suspicious until further notice and they WILL let you know that.

The book is fairly predictable by chick lit standards: the first jerky guy Maz meets is her love interest and he’s really not a jerk. And of course, Maz can do nothing right for the practice, which might go under before Emma gets back unless there’s a miracle. Luckily, all of this is dropped into the British country side instead of London and our heroine gets her hands dirty as a vet instead of working in publishing or something. There’s also a lot more putting animals down than I would have guessed. Having had a couple of good friends losing their animal companions in the last month, it was rough to read about (and they should NOT read this book!).

My library doesn’t carry the rest of the books in this series, but I’ll be on the lookout to catch up with Maz, Emma and Alex (and their animal menagerie) in the future.
