My Not So Perfect Life by Sophie Kinsella

30821598As someone who tries to curate her Instagram feed, I very much related to this story.

Cat, nee Katie, is new at her job at a branding agency, where everyone hates their overbearing boss. She commutes an hour (on a good day) for the privilege and is still trying to make her mark at the office. She’s a country girl, trying to make it in London, making no money, sharing a flat with terrible people and sneaking photos of other people’s lives for her Instagram. A chance encounter with a cute guy on the roof of her building (after her boss makes her re-do the boss’s roots) makes her think her life’s finally turning out the way she always dreamed. But then she gets laid off.

Going back to her dad’s place, Katie finds him in the middle of another get-rich-quick scheme. Realizing she can actually help him do it right, she tells a white lie about being on sabbatical from her job to make it happen. Then her boss shows up at their glamping grounds, and it all goes to hell.

As someone who sacrifices a lot to live in a world-class city AND who has had some not-so-great bosses (though luckily, not at the same time), I really felt Katie’s dilemma. It’s hard to keep going when it feels like everything is telling you “no.” And given our/my obsession with social media, it’s really easy to project that your life is going however you’d like. Making connections as an adult, out of college, is difficult, and her desire to fit in really struck me. Also made me realize that perhaps I shouldn’t have been so hard on some of those not-so-great bosses. Still waiting to meet the cute guy who wants to stay with me though. Guess I need to try a Santa-themed bike ride across London!

#Jenniversary: Finish Line!

I meant to update this more often, but well, life happened. Week 2 was…a week and then it was my birthday, followed by a holiday and all of the sudden, it’s the end of the month. Oops!

But I’m happy to report that I finished all 360,000 steps! As you can see, I missed my daily goal of 12K only 4 times and only did less than 10K steps once (flying all day). Even though I didn’t really lose any weight (see above for how this month has gone – LOL), it was fun to challenge myself to go further than I had before. That said, I’m excited to go back to 10K steps tomorrow!

I also managed to post on Instagram every day this month. Some days were harder to post on than others, and I definitely spent more time crafting photos than usual. But it really made me live in the moment and look at what I consider a normally mundane life as something worthy of documenting. Below are my most liked photos from the last month.

Birthday weekend is getting off to a great start! 🍩💯 #jenniversary2016

#Jenniversary: Week One Progress Report

So far, so good! It’s been harder than I thought to add those extra 2K steps a day, and I have a feeling it’s only going to get worse with it being dark when I leave work. But week one is done and dusted with a total of 86,829 steps. Only 273,171 steps to go!

And following the #jenniversary2016 tag on Instagram, I’ve managed to post every day. Too many sunsets, I know, but I do love them! Hopefully, I can continue to expand my aesthetic and find new ways to document my daily life this month.

Birthday Month Challenge

It’s officially November and I’ve got about three weeks until my birthday. Every year, I like to set a challenge for myself or make some resolutions for the coming year. Last year’s 35-for-35 challenge did NOT go well, mostly because I tried to do too much for too long a period of time. So this year, I’m going to simplify things, while still challenging myself!

1. 360,000 steps in November
In honor of this year’s birthday, I’m upping my steps for this month. It works out to about 12K steps a day, which will definitely be challenging with the time change this weekend and less overall daylight. Some days may be more and some days less (though hopefully at least 10K a day), but that’s the overall goal. I hope I won’t have to do all the steps as laps around my tiny apartment, but I’m up for it, if need be.

2. Instagram every day
As you may have guessed, I’m obsessed with Instagram. My goal this month is to post a new photo every day. Most of my posts are sunsets and food these days and I’m hoping this will challenge me to be more creative, while still documenting my day. Follow #jenniversary2016 or watch my Instagram for my progress.

Here’s to a successful November!

Quick Hits Before Bed

Trying to get back into this writing thing after a few days off!

  • Had a lovely dinner with Katia, J and J’s British parents at one of my favorite restaurants. Now have enough leftovers to last me quite a while!
  • Also had lovely dinner out last night with the grad program. Fabulous mac & cheese to cap the meal (which you would NOT expect at a Peruvian place, but YUM!)
  • Read a fabulous piece in Forbes about Isabella Boylston, which led me to an article in Elle about what she eats (which was fascinating in itself). But that made me realize that my favorite ballet people are on Instagram, just like any other public people. So I did a lot of ballet following today and my feed is better for it.
  • And because of that, I also did Day One of the ab workout that Jenny at Southern Savers started yesterday (so I’m a day behind). I forgot how much sit ups hurt my tailbone and all the joints cracking as I did leg raises. But I’ve got to add strength in addition to cardio, so here’s a place to start.

Trying to go to bed earlier tonight because I’m already exhausted and it’s only Tuesday!
